Nutrition tip of the month:
The Beefy Benefits of Grass Fed Meats
By Christine Borgstad, BSc Dietetics
Beef provides one of the best possible food sources of iron and protein among other vital nutrients. So why then does beef often show up on
health care professionals’ top-10 lists of foods to reduce or avoid? Typically, it’s because people tend to eat unreasonably large portions of beef.
While one 140g portion of steak served with a large salad may be a healthy choice, when combined with the 280g steak from the previous
night’s dinner and the cheeseburger from today’s lunch, it is probably doing more harm than good.
In addition to watching your portion sizes,
there is another way to make beef a healthy component of your diet. Although most beef available in supermarkets has been grain fed, grassfed
beef is now more widely available. Biologically, grass is the food of choice for cattle. Grass-fed animals tend to have better digestion and
produce nutritionally superior beef compared to their grain-fed counterparts. The end product also provides more vitamin E, beta carotene, B
vitamins and minerals including iron, calcium, magnesium and potassium. Best of all, grass-fed beef is lower in overall fat but higher in hearthealthy
omega-3 fat. The average North American diet is far higher in omega-6 fats than omega-3s and this imbalance is a key factor in the
development of cardiovascular disease, cancer and a host of inflammation-related ailments. Choosing grass-fed beef is one way of improving
your ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fats.
Newer to Choices Markets is locally raised grass-fed beef from Black Creek Ranch, a rancher co-op based
in Kamloops. Combination packs of Black Creek Ranch grass-fed beef are available by order through Choices Markets' website. For more
information visit www.choicesmarkets.com/meat-order or www.blackcreekranch.com.
Christine is a nutritional consultant for Choices Markets and can be reached at our Burnaby Crest location (8683 10th Ave) on Saturdays or
at our head office Wednesday to Fridays.
